I had a dream last night. I dreamt that I walked into some generic Brooklyn grocery store like C-Town or Key Food and had my choice of French fried onions. The shelf was stocked full of Durkee, French’s, some kind I’d never heard of, along with a store brand. It was only a dream.
I believe that the reason my tuna noodle casserole didn’t place at my Second Annual Casserole Party, held last October, was because I had to use potato chips, instead of French fried onions, for my crusty topping. Yes, they’re that good.
Am I missing something here? Are French fried onions not available in Brooklyn because they’re too tacky for New Yorkers? I honestly wouldn’t be surprised; my ex, who was raised on both coasts, once turned his nose up at my love of Durkee Onions and suggested I should “at least French fry your own onions.” That’s like saying if I cut up my own potatoes and fry them, that they’ll be as good as McDonald’s fries. They just won’t. Sure, they might be better for me, and a little more sophisticated, but there’s no denying that fresh, heavily salted McDonald’s fries are amazing.
I’m holding out hope that I can buy Durkee Onions in bulk at Costco. If anyone knows where I can buy French fried onions–any brand–in Brooklyn, please let me know in the comments section.

Did you ever find your f/f onions? I work for Costco and we sell French’s brand in 1 1/2 lb bags for $4.50 in Hanover, Maryland. I love ‘em too and would be glad to help you get them. I also have a recipe clipped from the back of a can of Durkee Fried Onions more than 20 years ago called “Harvest Vegetable Scallop” that is delicious! To this day it is still a must have at all family occasions. Although it contains broccoli and carrots even the children love it and go back for seconds! Let me know and I’d be happy to share. ~ Angie

Hi Kiwi Girl, “Harvest Vegetable Scallop” is: 4 med carrots, thinly sliced (about 2 cups) – 1 pkg (10 oz.) frozen chopped broccoli, thawed and drained – 1 1/2 C. French Fried Onions – 5 small red potatoes, sliced 1/8 inch thick (about 2 cups) – 8 oz. pasteurized processed cheese spread (Velveeta’s the best) – 1/4 cup milk – ground black pepper – seasoned salt. To prepare: Combine carrots, broccoli and 1 C. French Fried Onions in 8″ x 12″ baking dish. Tuck potato slices into vegetable mixture at an angle. Dot vegetables evenly with cheese spread. Pour milk over vegetables; sprinkle with seasonings as desired. Bake, covered, in 375 degree oven for 30 min. or until vegetables are tender. Top with remaining onions; bake, uncovered, 3 min. or until onions are golden. Makes 6 servings. ENJOY! – As with any recipe, I make it to suit my taste. I use a little less carrot and I find that 2 cups of the potatoes seems to be a little too much potato. I use more cheese and sprinkle more F/F onions on top for extra crunchiness. I hope you like this as much as my family does! Happy Holidays! ~ Angie
